If You're A Teen Driver, Keep These Two Things In Mind While You Wait For Roadside Assistance

Posted on: 7 April 2016

As a teenager who is new to driving, you might not think too often about roadside assistance, but roadside assistance after your vehicle has stopped working or run out of gas is not as uncommon as you might think. It's a good idea to know what to expect while you wait for a tow truck driver, and to know the right things to do if you ever find yourself in that situation.

Stop Using Your Phone

Your parents may have prepped you for a situation where you need a tow, but after you talk with a towing company, you might think that all you need to do is hang out and wait for them to get there. You may call your best friend to find out what she's up to or you might get in touch with your boyfriend or girlfriend and want to talk until the tow truck is there.

It's not a good idea to spend all your waiting time on the phone for a number of reasons. First, if the driver of the tow truck needs to reach you, they may not get the chance if you're already on the phone and don't switch to their call quickly enough. Not only that, but you may be waiting longer than you expect and need to conserve the battery just in case. While you might want to call our parents quickly, keep your phone out of use until the truck arrives to collect you and your car.

Ask for ID

One easy mistake to make when you've already called for help is to make the assumption that someone with a truck is from the towing company you've called. However, be aware that towing scams exist and that the person who walks up to your car might not be the person you were waiting for.

Ask anyone who approaches you for identification and look for markers on their truck that could give you some idea of their identity, such as a company logo. If you think of it, remember to ask the towing company for a name.

With these suggestions, you should be well-prepared for an experience where you need roadside assistance. Get in touch with some towing service companies to get an idea of rates and other things you should be aware of in case you ever need to call them.  To learn more info, contact a roadside assistance company.
